Whidbey Island. . Yesterday, I took my first trip to one of the islands surrounding Seattle... something I hadn’t done in the year and a half since moving here. . Whidbey was pure magic, which makes sense since Practical Magic was filmed there. (In the most magical twist of timing, I found out this morning that they’re making a sequel!! Just after I visited Coupeville, where the original was shot.) . I could write endlessly about how dreamy it all was... from rosemary spilling over bluffs above the ocean and picket fences framing charming homes, to forested sculpture gardens, wild daisies dotting seaside parks, and sandwich shops turning out roasted veggie masterpieces on local bread. . But what I keep thinking about is this: why did it take me so long to go? . It’s easy to fall into routines, even ones we don’t like. We cling to them as anchors when sometimes, they’re really just weights. And while we need grounding at times, we also need to let go, to see new places, feel the ocean air tangle our hair, stand on ferry decks, and remember how big and beautiful the world is. . Over the past year and a half, I fell into routines I thought would help me fit into the life I was trying to build. But in doing so, I confined myself... afraid to explore, pouring everything I had into something already built, instead of creating something for myself. . Standing ankle-deep in the waters of Whidbey, I realized how much is shifting. Not just in small ways, but in the whole lens through which I see my life. "Perspective," my word of the year, feels more alive than ever. . Since putting in my two weeks’ notice at my Seattle job two weeks ago and stepping into a new (temporary! but exciting) opportunity, I’ve been thinking a lot about the role routines play in our lives. They can steady us, but they can also stall us. This next chapter is about using routines to stay grounded, not stuck. #practicalmagic #practicalmagictiktok
