I am so grateful that I can make my books on my own terms, so in the end, it worked out for me! The issue came from the fact that the contract said in big bold letters “10% royalty”, and I saw underneath (ofc I read it all as a law school grad) it said that the royalty would be cut in half if the book was sold for more than 65% off the retail price. What I didn’t know until about 6 months after it was published is that every copy sold to a big box store was at the 65% off rate. I did the deal to begin with because I was explicitly promised that big box stores would buy thousands of copies, and that I would get a 10% royalty. Ultimately, I felt a little misled, but it wasn’t on purpose, and I have no hard feelings about it. But getting less than 50¢ per copy was a little underwhelming to me, and now that I create the books on my own, I have total control and freedom to make what I want!!! I was originally going to be scooping a mix of stickers for these orders but we really wanted to make sure that people aren’t getting a bunch of duplicates of the same sticker, so we ended up hand building the packs to make sure there was a lot of variety! Don’t worry though, we aren’t putting any state stickers in the mix! I've never done a sale this big, but each sticker is quite literally 50 cents each when you snag a pack! Replying to @MAR we still have MANY in stock, AND we have opened preorders for the ones we’ll get restocked in about 2 months. This is why there are huge gaps of certain types of cases being out of stock—we just never received them from our manufacturer because they got damaged in transit and UPS threw them away. We only found this out after calling UPS 7 different times and getting pieces of the story with each call. The manufacturer paid for the shipping, so UPS was resistant to tell us anything at all. The manufacturer also declined to get insurance on the shipment (I wasn’t asked about that) so they are not getting reimbursed for the missing goods either, hence why they don’t want to refund me. I PROMISE IM NOT LYING TO YOU 🍄 Last year, I set out to redesign all of my accessories—wallets, wristlets, luggage tags, passport covers—AND I knew I wanted to add even more options since they have been such popular items! I decided to switch to a new manufacturer because I had been working with different companies for each of those products, and I realllllyyy wanted to bring them under one roof so the colors and quality would match on each item. Once I found the right partners, I discovered these items could be made from a much more sustainable material than the plastic-based faux leather I had my previous products made of. I was SO excited by that opportunity, but it was over 25% more expensive than traditional plastic-based faux leather. It really wasn’t a hard decision to opt for the more sustainable material despite the cost—and I DIDN’T raise my prices as a result of the switch. It is really exciting meaningful to me that I am able to offer such an innovative material, and I am so proud to say that all these items are now made from mushroom leather!! It’s really important to me that my items are as low-impact as possible. Not only is good quality & durability key (so products don’t need to be replaced as a result of normal wear and tear), but also trying to deriving materials from renewable sources—and I am so thrilled that mushroom leather strikes that balance!! You’ll definitely be hearing a lot more about mushroom leather from me because I’m so so happy that I was able to make this switch for my products.
